This January I had the pleasure of capturing Sarah and Levi during a winter horse and rider session.
There’s something magical about a winter horse-and-rider session, especially when paired with the timeless charm of Western fashion. Recently, I had the opportunity to capture a breathtaking session that truly embodied the season’s spirit. From the crunch of snow under hooves to the golden light filtering through the trees, every moment felt like a scene from a storybook.
The Setting: A Trail Worth the Ride
For this session, we ventured down a winding trail leading to a stunning riverside backdrop. The journey itself was part of the experience—we hiked down together, taking in the quiet beauty of the winter landscape. The bare trees framed the scene beautifully, and the water, partially frozen, reflected the cool tones of the season. There’s something about the contrast of warm Western tones against a winter setting that makes for striking imagery.
The Look: Western Elegance Meets Rustic Charm
What really made this session stand out were the incredible details of the rider’s outfit. A classic cowboy hat, leather gloves, and layers of rich textures brought a sense of authenticity to the shoot. Western fashion always tells a story, and in the crisp winter air, it felt even more cinematic. The way the coat moved with the rider, the subtle dusting of snow on worn leather boots—these little details brought the images to life.
Chasing Light & Capturing Angles
One of the best parts of a winter shoot is the way the light plays off the landscape. The soft, diffused glow of an overcast day can create an ethereal feel, while the golden hues of a late afternoon sun add warmth to the cool surroundings. We captured a mix of both, experimenting with different angles—wide shots to showcase the scenery and close-ups that focused on the connection between horse and rider. The versatility of the setting allowed for a collection of images that felt both adventurous and intimate.
Why Winter Sessions are Worth It
If you’ve ever considered a winter horse and rider session, let this be your sign to go for it! While the cold may seem daunting, the payoff is absolutely worth it. The season offers a unique backdrop that makes for some of the most stunning, atmospheric photos. Plus, there’s a peacefulness to winter rides that adds a special touch to every image.
So, bundle up, embrace the season, and let’s create something unforgettable. Winter is a time of quiet beauty, and there’s no better way to capture it than with a horse by your side.
